When is a club not a club?

Have had some reaction since last week to my suggestion that after-clubs like Twist are not really clubs. In fact, some people have argued that clubs like Twist are really two clubs in one. On the one hand you've got the regulars, who go there generally weekly, while on the other hand you've got the people keeping the party going from wherever they were before. To some extent, it may be difficult for the two groups to mix, but that, as one writer pointed out, doesn't really matter so long as the atmosphere is okay, and people are having a good time, which at Twist, they generally are. Someone else also pointed out, that it's still early days for Twist, and that I'm being unfair; I should perhaps give it more time.

Battle of the After Parties.

Yet more news from the Sundissential camp, as they have just announced the new location for Afterssential in Birmingham, which is to be Bar 9 on Broad St. (formerly Stoodibakers).

Following a difference with Subway City, Sundissential decided to relocate Afterssential, and the new club is due to open when Sundissential HQ opens a Cobarna on the 8th. of November. Subway City, so has decided to keep its after-party going, rebranding it as “Afters”. Clubbers appeared to be pleased with the idea of having two clubs to go to, but it's unlikely that both will survive if both maintain a tight entry policy. Subway City has recently been cleaning up who they allow in with a tighter door policy, and Sundissential has vowed that it won't let beer boys in from Broad St. (a popular but ritzy location on a Saturday night). In the event that both Afters and Afterssential strictly enforce a clubbers-only policy they will then be competing for exactly the same market, that is whoever’s been to Sundissential beforehand. With the capacity of Cobarna significantly less than The Sanctuary and as a rule of thumb only half those who have gone to Sundissential beforehand staying on to an after party, it seems unlikely that either Afters or Afterssential we have much atmosphere if each then split that market. The likelihood is that one will come to dominate and that is likely to be based on which is the most popular once Afterssential opens. Afterssential has the uphill battle because Afters and Subway City are already established, known quantities, and there is some concern about the possibility of problems with beer boys on Broad St. It'll be interesting therefore to see what incentives if any Afterssential offers clubbers during its opening few weeks.

I’m a Promoter, Get me Out of Here!

Paul Madan, past promoter of Sundissential has continued his war of words, posting messages to a variety of clubbing Web boards, and tomorrow night is due to address the audience at God's Kitchen. Fortunately, so far, this has been a battle of words versus deeds. In the face of numerous libellous accusations made by Paul, aka “Uncle” Madders, the management of Sundissential have remained almost uniformly silent. Instead they have met words with action, a very effective response, so far; (I detailed some of them last week, more are listed below). Many clubbers have expressed indifference or disgust with Paul Madan's behaviour. However the issue which concerns me most is the danger that Birmingham potentially faces the same kind of split in the clubbing community which was experienced in Leeds some years ago, when a split between the promoters of the Glasshouse polarised the clubbing community there. Clubbers were asked to choose between two clubs run by two former partners, and the dispute between the promoters spilled over into the clubbing community creating rifts between friends which, as far as I know, in some cases still remain to this day. Those who in Birmingham now seek to take sides in what is in essence a business dispute between former partners, should bear this in mind.

In that regard I'm quoting here with his permission, something written recently on the Sundissential Web board by Andyb:

“Madders , if you think your ramblings are going to have an enormous effect on the well being of Sundissential then you are a bigger fool than you have already made yourself out to be . What you seem to forget is that Sundissential has/isnt + never will be about either you , Danny , Helen or Louise. The things that Sundissential are about cannot ever be taken away or indeed owned.”

Twist. Every Sunday morning from 5:00am (new, earlier opening time!) at Fire, Vauxhall, London. The new resident DJ line up for Twist is, in the main room, Danny Gilligan, Peter Ward, *TING*, Karim, and in THE FIREPIT, the funky tekno sounds of Mrs Wood and Rod Towns. We will also have big name guest DJs but these WILL NOT be advertised in advance. This might be BK, Farley, Glazby, Savage, Lashes etc. etc. Then again, it might not.

The prior anticipation for the last Ice Party at The Egg saw hundreds of eager punters arriving at the venue before the party was due to start. The club opened early to accommodate the hot and eager Ice kids. Unlike any other event in London, Ice drew an international crowd who flew in from Miami, NY, San Francisco and Los Angeles. This month's event aims to continue delivering exclusive tribal sounds for a beautiful global crowd, in London's classiest after-hours venue. Ice is the official after-party for Scream at Heaven. There's a free shuttle service from Embankment tube at 4:30am and 5:30am. You're either on the bus, or off the bus.

Playing for the first time at Ice will be Swedish heart-throb D'Johnny. Hailing from Gothenburg, the blonde bombshell has proved a hit in London, with residencies at Detox, Babylon Burlesque, Heaven, Timebomb, Ikon and Escape. His pumping, funky house sound is sure to prove a treat for the Ice party boys. Circuit superstar Wayne G has just returned from frenzied receptions in New Orleans, Los Angeles and Paris. Wayne's recently been in the studio to remix the latest Kylie single. He's given 'Slow' a tribal workout and has tailored the track especially for the steamy Ice dancefloor. Once again, Dick Flick and Fat Tony will be larging it in the plush surroundings of the Egg's Loft Bar. Their brand of soulful house, filtered funk and classics are the perfect sounds for post dawn socialising. After Dick Flick's last set at Ice he commented, 'I can't believe it. I'm not dead and neither is disco. Long live Ice Society'.

Resident DJs: Dick Flick, D' Johnny, Fat Tony, Gonzalo, Guy Williams, Jeffrey Hinton, Jon Dennis, Junior J, Justin Ballard, Malcolm Duffy, Max Latino, Oli, Pete Wardman, Peter Ward, Rob Sykes, Rosco, Steve Thomas, Sugar Bear, Tom McMillan, Tyrone, Wayne G, Ziad + special guests.
