In brief:

  • Birmingham Pride.
  • Milk, London Closed.

BIRMINGHAM PRIDE - This Bank Holiday Weekend

For those into hard dance and mates coming up from London my sense of what's to do during Birmingham Pride is as follows:

Saturday: Carnival Parade Route

This year the parade will have a brand new route, commencing from Victoria Square at 6.00pm (assembly from 4.00pm onwards) and will wind its way the full length of New Street, turning left into High Street, right into Carrs Lane, right into Moor Street on along the Queensway and left into Hurst Street and into the festival site. This year the theme is Fruits.

Saturday afternoon spend the day enjoying the stalls and exhibits on and around Hurst Street, but bring a brollie 'cos the weather's predicted to be showery

Saturday evening it's probably going to be The Nightingale, which you can expect to be packed solid, so you'd be advised to get here early, though Subway City/Afters will be running as normal.

Sunday: The Subway City Dance Tent at Pride runs from 2pm – 11pm with a top notch line-up (though I'm told Ian M will not be playing, sadly), followed by Subway City's Pride event at the club starting 10pm and running through to noon Monday. (Note also that Sundissential at The Works will be running on Sunday from 2pm to 2am). Entry to Subway is priced at £15 for members and £20 for guests, though Sundissentialers coming from The Works get in for £13 with flyer. However, if you are dong Sundissential, and if Subway does get busy then you should note that there might be a limit on how many they can fit in the place and so you should also aim to get to SC earlier than 2-2:30. SC are running a bus from The Works from 1:30am, though you could walk it in half an hour or so.

Those coming to visit Brum might want to check out the new Bull Ring centre, and walk around Selfridges - have a look at the price tags on virtually anything if you want a good laugh. The sushi bar there is recommended, and check out The Mail Box which is not far away, for shops, bars and restaurants if you fancy getting away from the gay scene for a bit.

Milk - Message from Piers

"Greetings ex-Milkers!

Apologies for the email when we promised that the last one was the LAST one, but we've been inundated with calls and emails from people asking why we stopped Milk last month so we felt we owed you all an explanation.

>>> WHY??? <<<
There were a whole host of reasons, but probably the main one was the change in the hard dance scene in London. You've probably noticed that there are fewer big Friday night events than there used to be, and over the last year or so we found this meant a gradual decline in the numbers of people who were out and about and looking for an afterparty on Saturday mornings, which had an inevitable effect on us.

We had always wanted to try a multi-room format for our afterparty and the move to Studio 33 was in many ways a brave one, but we felt it was what we wanted to try and we were delighted with the results. We got fantastic feedback from everyone who came along, but we made the move at a time when the demand simply wasn't enough to support a party on the scale we were running so we had to accept it was unsustainable.

The other thing is that when we started Milk we were basically a group of friends putting on a little party, and it just kept on growing till suddenly we realised we had a bit of a success on our hands. Although we'd never planned it to get to that stage, once it did we felt we owed it to everyone to carry on and see where we could take it. We never saw it as a business and all had other jobs, and as the party grew it started to become an increasing burden on our time.

Of course we all loved doing it, but ultimately we reached a stage where, after 3.5 years, some of us wanted to move on and do other
things. Combine this with the general state of the market and we realised that if Milk were to survive and flourish then it would have
to change out of all recognition and become more commercial, and at the end of the day we decided we'd rather stop it and remember as it always was, rather than see it mutate into something completely different.

So, our Easter party turned out to be our last, and happily it was a great morning with a fantastic vibe and top tunes all day, with loads of our friends - new and old - there to say goodbye."
