- The Kudos group established stylish gay bars in London, and
when they opened in Birmingham in 2001 they gave the gay scene
there a good kick up the arse, raising the standard and forcing
others to raise theirs to compete.
Under the managment of Andy, they tried a number
of great new ideas, including the Breakfast Bar,
an after-hours event, starting at 3am Sunday mornings and running
though to 9-ish.
It's mainly one long cavernous room with an outside patio, and
a balcony equipped with comfy leather sofas overlooking the dance
area. There's a stage, with loads of cute guys and some gals showing
that they're still capable of flaunting it, even though the Sunday
papers have long since been pushed through their boxes.
Entry is about £7 or £8, though they've started a
membership scheme, (£12 per annum), which reduces the charge
to only £4. Security are sensible and the music is great
- largely mixes of house and funky house, with some pop thrown
in for good measure.
Lots of people come there from Subway, The
Nightingale, DV8 and Miss Moneypennies,
though more recently there have been some disgrintled murmerings
from the gay clientele that Breakfast Bar is becoming too straight.
Andy went on to manage Mantos on Canal Street in Manchester and
the Breakfast Bar has gone from strength to strength under the
new manager, Ian, and his capable and friendly
staff.
A new Friday night / Saturday morning event, More Than
started early in 2003, hoping to replicate the success of the
Breakfast Bar.
The success of the venue as a place for clubbers who want to carry
on the party "after-hours" may be behind the latest
refurbishment. Complacent club owners take note - this venue has
only been open a relatively short while and they're already improving
it! Rumours circulating suggest that the long bar is to be resited
to the front of the club and the long open area is to be split
into two rooms, with one to be a dance room! From Kudos Bar to
Kudos Club??? We'll have to wait and see what the place is like
when the wrapper comes off!

Refurbishment Announcement |
"Kudos will be closed
from Tuesday 6th May (straight after the Bank Holiday) until
Friday 23rd May for major refurbishment.
We are planning some key changes in the venue, which will include
a small intimate bar for the early evening crowd together with
a separate club for hosting those oh so popular Breakfast
Clubs.
We will re-open on Friday 23rd May for an exclusive PRIDE PREVIEW
WEEKEND starting with MoreThan… a weekly Friday club night
from 2am – late, with a 6am liquor licence.
On Saturday 24th, we will be opening at 2pm in time to ‘relax’
(hic!) before the Parade at 5pm. Later on Lola Lasagne will
be strutting her stuff along with Maxi Malone and of course
– where would Pride be without the usual marathon of Breakfast
Clubs on the Sunday & Monday mornings – both with
6am liquor licences.
Squeezed in between those two hedonistic wonders will be Sweat
– from 2pm til late – just to keep you from twiddling
your thumbs!
Join us we “Unmask… The Transformed Image of Kudos
Club & Bar.
The date for an official re-launch night will be announced over
the preview weekend (any excuse for another party!!)…..
Kudos will then re-open 6 nights a week with big events planned
starting with a new monthly women’s night in conjunction
with the girlz at The Fox.
If you’re around for Pride, Kudos will definitely be a
place to visit."
